The 3 Way Fist

San Do Kuen literally means “Three Way Fist.” There are 3 main types of martial arts techniques – soft style, hard style and weapons-based techniques.

San Do Kuen combines the common and essential movements from a hard style (Isshinryu Karate), a soft style (Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu) and a weapons based art (Philippine Combat Arnis).

San Do Kuen does not contain any “new” movements because there is no such thing as a new martial arts technique – there is only interpretation and adaptation of the myriad of techniques that already exist.

MARTIAL ARTS ARE FOR SELF-DEFENSE, NOT COMPETITION

Many people confuse ring sports like boxing, MMA, UFC and kickboxing for self defense systems.  Ring sports teach combative techniques, but the techniques are based on and limited by the rules of competition.   On the street there are no rules.  San Do Kuen focuses on techniques that will save your life, not win you a trophy.

THE BEST TECHNIQUES ARE SIMPLE

Many people believe that the best martial arts moves are fancy and complex.  In reality, simple techniques are always the most effective – and they are easier to learn and memorize.  San Do Kuen favors quality of technique over quantity of technique.

NO SINGLE STYLE OR SYSTEM IS SUPREME

There is no such thing as the “best” style of martial arts, all systems contain something valuable.  The difference between martial artists is quite often their level of fitness, not their technique.  Style is an abstract, academic concept that distracts students from their training goals.  The point of martial arts training is not to become part of a style or system, but to improve ourselves through rigorous training.
