Style Doesn’t Matter

So many people in the martial arts world are caught up in either narrowly subscribing to one system or dabbling excessively in too many styles – both paths lead to the same result – nothing! No traditional style is pure, and no modern style is truly new. All traditional styles are some blend of older systems and all modern martial arts are derived from traditional styles.

What is Style Anyway?

The concept of style is academic, it is not functional or practical idea. Martial arts movements are based on the dynamics of the human body as it functions in combat, not on the abstract philosophical concepts of style.  A punch is either effective or not, and that is a result of the person who delivers it, not what style they practice.  San Do Kuen is a name and refers to a “style” only because that is how everyone understands martial arts, not because those words completely define the art. There is no move that is unique to San Do Kuen, and at the same time, there is no style like it.  In the West, we need everything to fit into a category to understand it, but in reality there are no catergories, there are only movements.  Everything else is false.

We cannot understand the character of a punch by naming and explaining it, only through practice can we unlock its true meaning.
